10 Top Alexander Tips

bullet

Stop living in front of yourself. Almost everything we do is in front of us. Become aware of the large mass behind yourself which is your back.

bullet

Take on board that your physical or postural set is not a fact but a habit. A habit is like a tapestry; you can change it as much as you want, but first you have to unpick it stitch by stitch.

bullet

Choose to become aware of what you do with yourself in activity.

bullet

Consider that the way you think can become a way of changing your muscle coordination and undoing tensions.

bullet

Bear in mind that what you get is what you ask for; so start asking your neck, your  shoulders, your legs etc. to let go of some of their tension and move more smoothly.

bullet

Each day, choose to become aware of three things that you have been doing automatically. You could start with the way you sit at your desk, drink a cup of tea, stand in a queue.

bullet

Start to think of yourself as an explorer: you can explore how you go about habitual activities.

bullet

Begin noticing when you turn off: e.g. when you are brushing your teeth/doing the dishes/getting out of the car, where is your mind?

bullet

Notice how much your thoughts are usually one or more steps ahead of you; i.e. if you are parking the car, are you thinking about the next hurdle?

bullet

Once a day, ask yourself about one thing you have been doing automatically: ‘Do I have to do it that way, or is there something I might like to change?'

Score

1-3 ‘YES’es.

You must be looking after yourself well.  Carry on doing what you’re doing – and see if you can start to be aware of what it is that you are doing, or not doing, that is working for you.

4-8 ‘YES’es

You situation is manageable, but you might like to think whether you want to put up with the pain you have.  You may not need to.

9-13 ‘YES’es

A score this high must be starting to impact on your quality of life.  If that is not what you want, the Alexander Technique will enable you to lower your score and improve quality.

14-18 ‘YES’es

Your quality of life has been seriously affected and you have probably felt the need to modify your life style to ‘protect’ yourself from pain.  An Alexander teacher can give you a lot of guidance so you can turn the situation around.  If you were a car, the Alexander Technique would enable you to soup up your engine.

19+ ‘YES’es

Ouch!  You can’t swap your body, but you can certainly upgrade it – a bit like dropping a Mercedes engine into a Lada.  We can’t promise that Alexander work will leave you with the body of Elle MacPherson or Joaquim Cortes, but you can expect a smoother, more reliable performance from it.
